  •  New Student Forms and Information
All students are required to complete the following forms. For your conveience, you can download copies and have them ready before you come to your first class.

    Equipment
A bokken for kata and a bokuto for sparring (wooden sword) are required for basic practice.  A bokken for beginners can be obtained from Karate Mart for $20 or less. A Bokuto including a leather Tsuba with Shinkendo logo costs $65 and may be obtained from your instructor.
Other equipment required for advanced training will be explained in class.

    Textbook
Shinkendo Textbook is required and available from on-line bookstores for about $35.  You can learn more about how to purchase books written by our founder on the National Shinkendo Product Page.

    Uniform
You may wear any martial arts uniform that you now have for your first few classes. Otherwise, wear suitable exercise clothing such as T-shirt and sweat pants.  Shorts or street clothes are not acceptable practice attire. The requirement of proper, basic white martial art uniform will be required within 2 weeks.  Basic white dogi is available from martial arts stores for $40 or less.  After joining International Shinkendo Federation, a proper set of Shinkendo uniforms will be required and the timeline and cost will be explained in class.

Membership in International Shinkendo Federation (ISF)
All new students are required to join the International Shinkendo Federation after their 1 month probation period. The annual fee for the ISF membership is $50 and for new members, this payment will cover the fee for their second month.

    Age Requirement
We accept students below the age of 18 with signed consent from their parent or guardian.  The minimum age is 16 but, depending upon the maturity of the student, we may accept younger.  Parent must interview with the instructor.

No martial arts experience or training is required to be a Shinkendo student.  If you have any existing health problem or other disability, please consult with instructor in advance of registration for classes.

    Joining a Class
In order to join our school prospective students need to visit the dojo and watch a class before joining. Guests are encouraged to ask questions prior to or following class. The Dojo does not require a contract. The first week is free. This free period allows the dojo to properly evaluate the suitability of the new student to Shinkendo and gives the student an opportunity to more fully experience Shinkendo prior to the decision to stay.
