Equipment
A bokken/bokuto (wooden sword) is required for basic practice. The dojo will supply a bokken for use in class, but it is recommended to purchase your own. To purchase a bokken approved for Shinkendo, please contact the instructor. Other Shinkendo approved equipment for purchase will be explained in class. PLEASE DO NOT BUY A REAL SWORD WITHOUT SPEAKING TO A SENSEI FIRST. Textbook The Shinkendo textbook is required and available from on-line bookstores for about $20. All other books written by Toshishiro Obata-kaiso are not required but recommended. Uniform You may wear any martial arts uniform that you now have for your first few classes. Otherwise, wear suitable exercise clothing such as T-shirt and sweat pants. The required uniform is a basic white martial art uniform with a black hakama. After joining the International Shinkendo Federation, a proper dogi and hakama will be required for class. While any martial arts equipment that meets these requirements is acceptable, Here are a few examples of what would be good.
